Lacrosse At KYS Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in many parts of the U.S. In June and August, clinics were conducted by KYS and local high school and college players at Lakeshore Park to introduce KYS players to the game.
Last fall, KYS organized a league for both boys and girls. About 50 children participated and a great time learning this new sport which is a combination of basketball, football, hockey and soccer. Teams were coached by parents, local college, and local high school players who have played lacrosse. Games were played at Lakeshore Park on youth baseball/softball fields. Boys were required to wear a helmet, gloves and pads, all of which can be purchased for about $200 locally at Athletic House (546-3131) near downtown Knoxville and Sports Corner (675-3330) in Farragut. Girl’s equipment is similarly available at less cost. KYS provided goals, lined the fields, and found coaches.
It’s interesting to note that there are local high school boys teams in Knoxville at Webb, West Bearden, and Farragut, plus a local girls club team for middle- and high-school students called the Cheetas. What’s more, UT has both a men’s and a women’s club team. So beginning players are able to watch games played by more experienced players at various sites in Knoxville. Also, Tennessee Wesleyan College recently announced that it is starting a program for both men and women this academic year. Vanderbilt offers a summer lacrosse camp, as do Baylor School and The McCallie School in Chattanooga.
